Getting laid off can feel like the end of the road. It’s not just the loss of a job or income—it shakes your confidence, your sense of security, and your future plans. I’ve been there. The frustration, the anger, the sadness—it all hit me hard. But what I want to share with you is that this painful moment can be the spark that ignites a powerful transformation. This is my story of turning setbacks into opportunities, and how you can do the same.
Getting Laid Off Changed Everything
When I was laid off in my early 20s, it felt like the rug was pulled out from under me. I was overwhelmed with emotions—frustration, anger, sadness, embarrassment. You hear about layoffs happening to other people, but when it happens to you, it hits different. I felt played. It wasn’t just the layoff itself; it was the buildup over years—the promises of job security that never materialized, raises that were talked about but barely given, and feeling undervalued despite all the effort I put in.
Before this, I ran sports camps across Northern Virginia. I was what some called a “Disneyland dad,” bringing joy to kids ages 2 to 5 with activities like throwing footballs into a giant inflatable Mr. Football. It was purposeful work—teaching kids about sports, activity, and even important safety lessons like stranger danger. I loved it, but I left because I thought it wasn’t stable enough. Unfortunately, I left one sinking ship for another.
In my next job, instability continued. Managers left abruptly, and my hours were cut until I was essentially laid off again. Despite staying late, waking up early, driving across Northern Virginia, and earning both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, I felt tossed aside like I was nothing.
The Painful Moment That Shifted Everything
But in that painful moment, something changed. I remembered my entrepreneurial spirit as a kid—selling potato chips on the playground, family newspapers, and taking sales jobs after college not because I loved them, but because I knew I needed the skills to start a business someday. The layoff was a turning point: I realized I had nothing left to lose.
I didn’t jump into a bunch of sales jobs but took one more, knowing it wouldn’t last. The instability continued, but my mindset was different this time. When my manager left again, leaving me without mentorship or support, I was ready. I was ready to make a change and take control of my future.
